Halloween is over but let’s be honest, we both know you’re still eating some of that left over candy! Don’t worry I’m not here to judge – BUT I will recommend some of my favorite non-toxic oral care products to keep those teeth nice and healthy! 😉
Before I get into my go to products lets talk conventional toothpaste/products first. Most popular conventional brands like Crest, Colgate, Oral B etc. contain some seriously sketchy ingredients that you may not even be aware of. With things like “All Natural Flavor” and “Natural Teeth Whitening!” on the packaging it can be easy to get lost in it all. No worries, I got your back. Here are some of the top toxic ingredients I recommend you avoid.
Sodium Fluoride
Fluoride is marketed as the main agent that keeps cavities away and prevents tooth decay. It’s one of those things that we’ve grown up using and has most likely even been promoted by your dentist. The problem is that studies are showing that continuous use/consumption of Fluoride can actually do more harm than good. Things like endocrine disruption, cancer, thyroid malfunction and tons more has been linked to this chemical that has already been banned by most of Europe. The truth is there are better alternatives to Fluoride for cavity prevention.
Triclosan
This chemical can be found in common household products like toothpaste, hand soap and body wash. It is marketed as an agent that “kills bacteria growth” in the mouth. The problem? Ongoing studies have raised the possibility of long-term effects on the body such as skin cancer, antibiotic resistance and damage to the immune system.
Dyes and Artificial SweetenersÂ
Sorry to break it to you but those cool green, blue and red colors in your tooth paste that taste sweet and minty are chemical AF. Most conventional toothpaste contain artificial flavoring and sweeteners such as aspartame that are linked to gastrointestinal issues and even cancer. Â The dyes are also commonly used (usually labeled FD&C BLUE 1 or RED 3 etc) and pose potential health risks if used or consumed on a regular basis (such as toothpaste).
Honestly the list goes on and on from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) to Propylene Glycol . “Normal” tooth pastes now days are FULL of weird chemicals that frankly just don’t need to be there. Have no fear though, my teeth are doing just fine and I don’t use any of the toxic stuff!
Here are the top non toxic oral care products we use in our home and love:
FAVORITE NON TOXIC ORAL CARE BRANDS
Dr. Brite is formulated by a sister duo – one of which is a dentist and the other a breast cancer surgeon. They proudly use organic ingredients, are vegan/cruelty free, eco-friendly and of course free of fluoride and harsh chemicals. They offer a variety of products from tooth paste to mouth wash and even teeth whitening pens! I use all three of these products in my home and absolutely loveee them all.
I’m currently using their mint flavored toothpaste + mouth wash daily and plan to try the strawberry flavor soon for my three-year old. I’ve read fantastic reviews on it and will be sure to update here once I get mine in! As for the mint flavor, it leaves my mouth feeling just as fresh and clean as conventional brands and more importantly doesn’t compromise my health. With ingredients like neem oil, activated charcoal and kaolin clay you really are getting top-notch products that not only clean your teeth but whitens them too!
Δ FANTASTIC DEAL ALERT! Δ : Dr. Brite was kind enough to offer my readers an exclusive limited discount on top of a bundle sale they’re currently offering through Sunday! For $19.99 you can purchase a 3 pack of their toothpaste (in your flavor choice) PLUS use my exclusive code ChooseLoveArt6 to get another $6 off bringing it down to just $15 for 3 tubes of tooth paste!! (after tax). Say whattttttttttt!  You can shop their bundles here ⇒  Dr. Brite Bundles
In addition to my Dr. Brite toothpaste I typically like to alternate my brushing with Ora Wellness‘ “Healthy Mouth Blend” tooth oil. It’s made up of certified organic essential oils that include: Cinnamon, Peppermint, Spearmint, Clove, Myrrh and Manuka in a base of organic almond oil. In addition to keeping your mouth super clean, this oil also helps to prevent and reverse gum disease and tooth decay!
Aside from the oil, Ora Wellness also offers a specifically formulated tooth-brush on their site with spaced out, rounded bristles (instead of the popular flat design) that are designed to really get into gums for thorough cleaning. The bristles are rounded at the ends to keep from tearing your gums (further contributing to sensitivity & nerve damage) and help prevent bacteria growth that leads to gum disease and cavities.
You drop about 2-3 drops of the oil onto your tooth brush and hold it at an angle versus the typical straight on method we were raised doing. By doing this, you allow for the bristles to really get under your gums for cleaning with the antibacterial properties of the blend. You can watch a great video tutorial they offer on the proper way to brush here ⇒ Brushing Tutorial
Since doing this my gums have reduced in sensitivity TREMENDOUSLY and I honestly can’t live without the product since trying it. I remember one odd morning waking up with a partially inflamed gum, so I rubbed the oil on it throughout the day and it was back to normal by night-time. You can also drop the oil on floss and use it that way too.
Another tooth paste brand we use in our home is Dr. Bronner’s “All-One Toothpaste”. Like Dr. Brite, this tooth paste is fluoride-free, vegan, non gmo and made with organic ingredients. The paste comes in a variety of flavors like cinnamon and mint helping to reduce plaque and naturally whiten teeth. The biggest difference between this paste and the Dr. Brite in my opinion is the texture. This one contains Menthol Crystals to help polish the teeth making it slightly more gritty/chalky feeling. Both are really effective with fantastic ingredients so it really just comes down to preference. My husband loves this one while I prefer Dr. Bite.
