DIY Halloween Snacks (with a healthy twist!)

Halloween is by far one of our favorite holidays of the year and it’s never too early to start planning some fun ideas. As a mother to a 6-year-old son, we make it a point in our home to go all out every year! From pumpkin carving, costume planning, to arts and crafts – there’s so many possibilities for a fun, kid friendly Halloween.

In addition to the above-mentioned activities, another one of our absolute favorite things to do is to create easy, Halloween inspired treats. The best part? We actually incorporate healthy ingredients to balance out all the candy that will surely be eaten on trick or treat night!

To help make these treats extra special, our friends at Party City have kindly #sponsored this post, so be sure to click the shoppable links included below to snag your DIY supplies. You honestly can’t beat the amazing selection of affordable items they offer, making them our go to store time after time.

For this year’s DIY Halloween treats, we decided to create Cake Bite Bats and Mini Graveyard Parfaits! These were so fun to make and it didn’t hurt that they actually had great ingredients mixed in to them.

What you’ll need

I’m all about simple projects so I promise these aren’t complicated to make at all. Thankfully, Party City had everything we needed for our decor items and I only spent $13 total! The rest of the food ingredients were items we already had but can be purchased easily at your preferred grocer. Below is a breakdown with links to all the items we used from Party City.

  • 1 Box of Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 1 Tub of Chocolate Desert Hummus (you could also use frosting)
  • 1 Tub of Chocolate Yogurt
  • 1 Pack of Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
  • 1 Pack of Rectangular Cookies
  • 1 Small pack of Gummy Worms

Cake Bite Bats

For your bats, the first thing you’ll need to do is bake your cake as instructed and let it cool. Next, break your cake apart into a large bowl and add in about 3 tbsp of your chocolate hummus (or frosting). Using your hands, combine the two together until a soft mixture forms that allows you to create a small ball in your hand.

To bring your bats to life, roll the ball into your chocolate sprinkles tub and stick in a half-broken chocolate cookie for its wings. Last, use your black gel as a paste to stick on your edible candy eyes.

Mini Graveyard Parfaits

Dirt and worms never tasted so good! To create your Mini Graveyard Parfaits, start by adding a few of your chocolate cookies (remove the frosting) into a food processor and blend. Repeat this process until the cookies resemble dirt. If you don’t have a food processor, you can also achieve this by adding a few cookies into a large plastic storage bag and crushing repeatedly with a large object.

Once you have your “dirt”, grab one of your mini parfait cups and begin layering your chocolate yogurt. For ours, we created five layers by alternating the two ingredients. For your tombstone, grab one of your rectangular cookies and break it in half. Next, use your black gel to easily write the letters “RIP”. To finish, add a few gummy worms to your dirt and your graveyard is complete!

These easy DIY snacks are such a fun activity for the entire family and we hope you give them a try! Thank you to Party City for making Halloween activities a wonderful and affordable tradition in our home every year.
